RIDE IMPACT
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
In Alberta’s first Ride to Conquer Cancer, 1,700 participants raised $7 million on an epic two-day ride for 200 km along the Cowboy Trail south of Calgary. This allowed for a net investment of $4 million for research at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary. This research pushes the boundaries of medical knowledge and improves prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment here in Alberta while contributing to the global cancer research effort. A 55 per cent return from total revenues is well within best practice fundraising guidelines for events. The investment required to attract large numbers of registrations and donations and to host a safe event is significant, but the net benefit is transformational.
INVESTING IN PROGRESS
Events like the Ride to Conquer Cancer account for roughly one third of the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s annual revenue. They have been the single largest success factor in ensuring Alberta builds one of Canada’s strongest cancer research programs and is able to attract and retain top research and clinical talent to the province. In 2010, we are pleased to welcome Enbridge as the title sponsor for the 2010 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. The participation of Enbridge employees and Enbridge sponsorship support ensures a greater net benefit.
Research breakthroughs in the past decade make it possible that a cancer-free future can be achieved within our lifetime. At the Alberta Cancer Foundation, we believe that future is inevitable and when we get there depends on the focus and energy we put to it today. The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is a bold event designed to take us the rest of the way to a future without cancer.
