Kickin’ it NancyStyle

On September 10, 2017, friends, family, and community members will come together to participate in the 2nd Annual Kickin’ it NancyStyle 5, 10 or 15 km run benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Patient Financial Assistance Program.

Last year we raised over $17,988.43 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Help us top that and continue supporting the necessary support the Patient Financial Assistance Program provides to Albertans facing cancer today.

Get involved by registering as a runner, cheering on the participants on race day, or donating now to be help make a difference for the 43 Albertans who will hear the words “you have cancer” like Nancy did in 2015.

Nancy's Story

On December 3rd, 2015, Nancy (Berg) Luyckfassel, a long time resident of Fort Saskatchewan and popular educator for Elk Island Public Schools, was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. She began intense chemotherapy on December 22nd which required her to stay at the Cross Cancer Institute for 5 - 8 days during each of her 6 chemotherapy cycles. Her treatment was difficult, both physically and emotionally, but she always kept a smile and positive attitude about her. The support of her family, friends, colleagues and health care team helped her immensely. On May 27, 2016 she was told that she was “cancer free”, but that maintenance treatment would continue for another 12-24 months to ensure she stayed in remission.

A year later, her oncologist (and life saver) Dr. Michael Chu confirmed that the recent PET scan showed “no evidence of disease”. The decision was made to cease maintenance treatment and move on to living a life without chemotherapy. After 225 days of that, Nancy was blissfully grateful (to say the least) !!!

This was a difficult journey, not only for her, but also for her family and loved ones. Through her journey, Nancy realized the devastating financial toll a Cancer diagnosis can take on a person’s life. Thankfully, Nancy and her family were well covered through employee benefit plans but she realized, by talking to patients and CCI staff, that this is not always the case. The Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Cross Cancer Institute were such a help with the emotional and medical support they provided to the entire family, and the Luyckfassels want to give back by raising money to support others in need.
