Many families have been touched by cancer. The Pigeon Lake Pedal was founded so that families could participate together in a cancer awareness and fund raising event while at the same time contributing to "pushing the cure for cancer" through their participation. For each of the past 5 years the Pigeon Lake Pedal has been a great "kick off to summer" and has raised funds for unique projects in cancer research, treatment and family support, all endorsed by the Alberta Cancer Foundation / Cross Cancer Institute. Importantly, we do this in a family orientated and fun filled manner where everyone comes together to recognize those impacted by cancer.
It is believed that early diagnosis can greatly impact the course of cancer. Funds from the 2010 Pigeon Lake Pedal will be directed to the Cross Cancer Institute for the purchase of a state of the art scanner to equip professionals with better tools to "see" tumours at an early stage. This scanner- the first of its kind in Canada- will merge PET & CT scans to provide new ways of looking at cancer. It will detect images of tumours only 2-3 millimetres in size compared to the 1-1.5 centimetre size currently possible. The new scanner is also much more efficient - allowing four times as many patients to be screened than with current technology helping to reduce wait times. The total cost of this new scanner is $3.5 million.
Costs to run the Pigeon Lake Pedal are minimal. We rely on volunteers, sponsors and donations to make the Pigeon Lake Pedal event happen so that over 95% of funds raised go directly to the cause. Register and create your own personal fundraising page and join our families as we pedal around Pigeon Lake on Saturday, July 3, 2010. The registration fee of $35 will be waived for all participants who raise $500 in pledges collected and returned to the Alberta Cancer Foundation by Wednesday June 30, 2010. Every $100 raised earns a ticket into the prize draw just after the BBQ lunch. Again this year we will have lots of fabulous prizes including a TRIP TO LAS VEGAS which includes flights and 3 night's accommodation for two based on double occupancy generously donated by NUNASTAR PROPERTIES and two nights at Jasper Park Lodge (from an anonymous donor)!
