British-born Dr. Nigel Brockton has a lot of titles. He’s a long-time survivor of Ewing’s sarcoma and a research scientist at Alberta Health Services, not to mention a former competitive skier who placed first at the FIS World Cup. Now, the Calgarian can add to his list of accomplishments: he has just been named one of Alberta Venture magazine’s 50 most influential people in the province, thanks to his research on lifestyle changes cancer patients can make to increase their survival chances. Speaking to Leap in 2011, Brockton said, “I’m interested in things patients can do that are not part of their treatment – exercise, vitamin D, anti-inflammatory drugs, having a healthy body weight – (that) might reduce the risk of the spread of cancer.”
