We have shared some of the most commonly asked questions, but we know that every gift is as unique as the individual giving it. Most donors opt to make one of two types of gifts: residual or specific.

A residual gift allows you to give a share or a percentage of whatever is leftover in your estate to charity. You may prefer this option if you’re unsure of the total size of your estate or you’re interested in dividing up your total assets among a few beneficiaries.

With a specific gift, you set a dollar amount to donate. You may prefer this option if you know the impact you want to make and the size of the gift that works for you.

Gifts to the Alberta Cancer Foundation priority needs allows us to invest in the next big idea, the latest technology, or next revolution in care. We recommend the following wording:

Residual gift:

I direct my Trustee to pay and transfer a ____ % share of the rest and residue of my estate to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (charitable registration # 11878 0477 RR0001).  This bequest is to be used to support an area of greatest need.

Specific gift:

I direct my trustee to pay the sum of $_________ dollars to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (charitable registration # 11878 0477 RR0001). This bequest is to be used to support an area of greatest need.

We know a key motivator for advancing treatment and care is rooted in a deep affiliation with experience at the local centre. The Alberta Cancer Foundation is honoured to be the funding partners of these world-class facilities and grateful to accept legacy gifts to advance their work. To designate your gift to one of these centres, we recommend this wording:

Arthur J. E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calgary:

I direct my Trustee to pay (the sum of $______ /and transfer a _________ % share of the rest and residue of my estate) to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (charitable registration # 11878 0477 RR0001).  This bequest is to be used to support an area of greatest need at the Arthur J. E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calgary.

Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton:

I direct my Trustee to pay (the sum of $______ /and transfer a _________ % share of the rest and residue of my estate) to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (charitable registration # 11878 0477 RR0001).  This bequest is to be used to support an area of greatest need at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.

Yes, you may specify the use of your gift to make impact that is meaningful to you. However, cancer research and care is fast-paced and ever evolving and we want to be sure your wishes are captured correctly to be put to be put to use. Please contact us to discuss the advancements you want to see so we can together craft customized wording that captures your intentions.

With designated gifts, we also recommend including a Power to Vary statement in your will to ensure that if your intended designation is not possible at the time the gift is received, we will still be able to make an impact in a way that closely aligns with the original intent. Our recommended Power to Vary statement is as follows:

In the event that circumstances make the specified use of this gift no longer practical or desirable, the Board of Trustees of the Alberta Cancer Foundation are hereby authorized to make changes in its use in keeping as far as possible with the spirit and general intent of the gift.

You can include the Alberta Cancer Foundation in your will, even if it’s already written. You can use a codicil to update your will at any time. Speak with your lawyer about what is best in your individual situation.
